What is Tai Chi?
Tai Chi is first and foremost a martial art system, which has great health benefits gained as part of its practice. We welcome students who want to practice Tai Chi purely for its health benefits as well as those who want to discover its martial benefits too.
Class structure
Our class structure follows a group warm up session of joint rotations, light stretching and leg swings to increase joint range of motion and waist swings which are used to relax the muscles and learn to apply the waist whilst maintaining the correct posture.
From there students are taught Chan Si Gung (silk reeling exercises), as well as the ‘18 Step’ Shi Ba Shi Chen Tai Chi form, progressing onto Laojia Yi Lu and Pao Chui. If the student requests it, the self defence applications within the forms are explained, demonstrated and practised.
Single Tui Shou and Double Tui Shou Pushing hands exercises are also taught.
Various methods of Chi Gung can be learned, which are excellent for the practice of relaxation, correcting posture and calming/focussing the mind.
We usually serve jasmine tea during the lesson and often play suitable traditional Chinese music.
